It snowed up to 30 cm in Kaimaktsalan, less in Velouchi, and even less in Helmos, Vasilitsa, and Lailias.
Fog is prevailing today at the two ski resorts currently open for skiing: Parnassos and Kaimaktsalan.
Today and tomorrow, races are being held at Kelaria.
A new organized low-pressure system is moving west of the Peloponnese, creating favorable conditions for the invasion of cold air masses from the north.
As the system "pulls" cold air from the Balkans, a noticeable drop in temperature will occur.
Today and tomorrow, light snowfall is expected in the mountainous regions of the mainland.
From Sunday night, snowfall will intensify and continue until Tuesday.
Two safety reminders:
Always have snow chains with you, a full fuel tank, or a fully charged battery if your vehicle is electric, appropriate equipment/clothing, and supplies like some food and water. Snow tires do not grip on smooth ice?when you notice this, stop and put on the chains.
Ski with controlled speed, and when descending the slope, avoid and give priority to those below you. If you want to stop, choose to do so at the edges of the slope, not in the middle.
With the closure of the Kaimaktsalan Ski Resort on April 14, 2024, due to the mild weather, the previous season officially came to an end. It was possibly the worst season of the past 30 years, marked by limited snowfall and unusually high temperatures. A striking fact is that in April, the beaches were as crowded as if it were June.
2019-2020 season was one of the best within the last 10 years. Up to the end of February we had almost every week new snow falls at altitudes above 1000 meters. March entered with higher temperatures and sunny weather.
At about 7 am Saturday 12/1/2019, an avalanche completely put down Styga chair-lift pillar 5. Fortunately, no injuries were caused. The avalanche was triggered by skilled personnel in order to provide safety for the skiers in the adjacent area. However, the end result was a much bigger avalanche than the one expected, causing major damage to the main chair lift, as you can see in the photo.
